Leaders, don’t be a stubborn mule, invest in executive coaching

Why leaders should invest in executive coaching…

Alright, leaders, gather ’round. We need to have a serious talk about executive coaching. I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “People have said I’m already a stellar leader, why do I need someone else telling me what to do?” Well, it’s like Willy Wonka. Investing in executive coaching is like getting a golden ticket to leadership greatness. Well, if you’re willing to put in the effort with the right coach! I mean c’mon, we all have room to learn and grow.

I have coached leaders who have been nominated for coaching or told to get coaching, and despite explaining what coaching is, the process, and the benefits, they don’t get it. They don’t see a need. They think all is fine and they are great. Despite the fact that data may inform them otherwise.

First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room: nobody’s perfect. We all have our blind spots and areas for improvement. Executive coaching helps you identify those blind spots and work on improving them. It’s like putting on a pair of prescription glasses – suddenly, everything becomes clearer.

But let’s not forget about the benefits. I’m big on clarifying those. And there are so many benefits of executive coaching. It’s like a buffet of leadership goodness. If you have the appetite!

Some benefits of executive coaching include:

It can help you develop your skills and unlock your full potential. Think of it like a personal trainer for your leadership muscles. They’ll push you, challenge you, and help you become the best leader you can be. Who doesn’t want that?

Next, it provides you with an outside perspective. Sometimes, when you’re in the trenches of leadership, it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. Executive coaching gives you a fresh set of eyes to look at your challenges and opportunities. It’s like having a GPS for your leadership journey – they’ll help you navigate the twists and turns.

And let’s not forget about accountability. We all need a little kick in the pants from time to time. Executive coaching is a collaborative process. A coach can help hold you accountable for your goals and help you stay on track. It’s like having a personal cheerleader and a stern coach all rolled into one. They’ll celebrate your victories, challenge your assumptions, and call you out on your excuses. Well, some coaches are more direct than others.  All for your benefit of becoming a better leader.

But here’s the thing, leaders. Investing in executive coaching isn’t just about you. That’s why I love working with what I call, boomerang leaders. It’s about your team and your organization as a whole. When you become a better leader, it has a ripple effect. Your team will be more engaged, motivated, and productive. It’s like injecting a shot of espresso into your company culture – suddenly, everyone’s energized and ready to conquer the world. Well, it’s not quite that easy but you get the gist.

Oh, and leaders, never underestimate the power of providing your team with coaching. New or emerging leaders often get great benefits from coaching whether individually or as a team. But as the leader of your team, you need to set the example and provide the opportunity. No, they won’t steal your job. In fact, your team can increase engagement and performance and support your goals and success.

How do you find the right executive coach?

Well, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack and can be a bit overwhelming to some, but with a little bit of guidance, you’ll get there.

  1. Do your research. Look for coaches who have experience working with leaders in your industry or similar roles. Ask for recommendations, read reviews, and do some good old-fashioned stalking on LinkedIn. Identify your values, style, needs, and goals (I often work on this with my coaching clients) and align those with a coach where possible. Consider certifications and experience. There are many different leadership coaches out there, so it is important to do your research and find one who is a good fit for you.
  2. Interview potential coaches. Treat it like a job interview – because let’s face it, they’re going to be working for you. Ask them about their coaching approach, their areas of expertise, their style, and their track record of success. And don’t forget to trust your gut. If you don’t click with the coach on a personal level, it’s not going to be a fruitful relationship. And a good coach will be happy to provide a referral who may be a better match.
  3. Be open and ready to learn. I mean really, if you aren’t and you don’t have a growth mindset, then you’re not going to reap the benefits of coaching. Remember, nobody’s perfect (even though sometimes you may feel you may come pretty close). Be willing to take feedback and be open to new ideas. It’s like trying a new cuisine – you might discover a new favorite dish. And hopefully, you don’t need an antacid.

Parting thoughts, leaders, investing in executive coaching is like giving yourself a leadership makeover. It helps you develop your skills, gain an outside perspective, stay accountable, grow, and achieve your goals. Plus, it has a positive impact on your team and organization. Win-win-win. So, don’t be a stubborn mule. Embrace the opportunity to become an even better leader. And who knows, maybe you’ll find your own version of the golden ticket along the way.
